Abstract

|
Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis is now generally considered an important pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. The authors evaluated the significances of M. catarrhalis isolation from the clinical specimens at Severance Hospital during the
last
five
years. The isolation was most frequent in the cold season and least in the summer. Among the 75 isolates, most were from sputum specimens of which about 40% caused definite infection. The most common infection was pneumonia. Elderly patients with
underlying diseases were quite susceptible. Ninty percent of the isolates were ¥â-lactamase positive by Cefinase disk test. Most of the isolates were susceptible to cephalothin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, erythromycin, cotrimoxazole, fusidic
acid,
and pefloxacin.
